FAQ

What does SY-NK stand for?

SY-NK is a trademarked contraction of Systemthink — a design philosophy founded by Halsted S. Welles. It emphasizes the integration of art, ecology, and humanity, where every part functions for the benefit of the whole. SY’NK is also the name of this platform: a home for sculpture, garden design, civic initiatives, and meditative media.

Who is Halsted S. Welles?

Halsted S. Welles is a sculptor, place-maker, and founder of Halsted Welles Associates. Educated at Yale and Antioch, he blends fine art, environmental systems, and philosophical inquiry into a decades-long body of work that spans sculpture, urban garden design, and symbolic public installations. SY-NK is his legacy project — and his invitation to the world.

What is the difference between Tokens, Trophies, and Sculptures?

  • Tokens are small cast replicas designed as symbolic gifts of recognition.
  • Trophies are desk-sized spinning sculptures that function as art objects or ceremonial awards.
  • Sculptures refer to larger-scale pieces, available for gardens, public installations, or custom commissions.

All are based on Halsted’s core forms: Resistance, Grace, and Resilience.

Are pieces available for purchase online?

Yes. Select Tokens, Trophies, framed stills, and limited sculpture editions are available through our online shop. Custom commissions and larger-scale pieces are available by consultation.

Can I commission a site-specific sculpture or garden?

Absolutely. SY-NK accepts a limited number of residential, institutional, and civic commissions each year. To begin, visit our Design Services page or Contact Us with your project scope and timeline.

What materials are your sculptures made from?

SY-NK works are fabricated in a range of materials depending on scale and context:

  • Tokens & trophies: Translucent, white, or gray resin
  • Garden icons: Limestone or granite
  • Urban installations: Granite, basalt, or custom-selected stone
  • Framed stills: Archival prints on fine art paper

Materials are chosen for their durability, visual resonance, and ecological ethics.

How do the Time-Lapse videos relate to the sculptures?

The Time-Lapse series documents the transformation of light, weather, and plant life in HWA-designed urban gardens. They reflect the same Systemthink principles found in the sculptures — balance, movement, presence — but experienced through time instead of form. Several stills and videos are available as part of the Traveling Exhibit or for private purchase.

Can I host the Traveling Exhibit at my gallery or institution?

Yes. The SY-NK Traveling Exhibit includes three monitors looping time-lapse video meditations and a collection of 25 framed stills. It’s ideal for museums, wellness spaces, design institutions, or public galleries. Visit the Traveling Exhibit page to request a booking packet.

Do you offer customization or engraving for awards?

Yes. Trophies and Tokens can be customized for institutions, award programs, or commemorations. Engraving, LED-lit bases, and bulk ordering options are available upon request.

How can I stay updated on new releases and projects?

Join the SY-NK mailing list to receive updates on product drops, studio writings, public installations, and upcoming events. You can also follow our journal through the Blog for reflections and announcements.
